Ho! AssKKKroft out

Attorney General John Ashcroft and Commerce Secretary Donald Evans resigned Tuesday, the first members of President Bush’s Cabinet.

...“The objective of securing the safety of Americans from crime and terror has been achieved,” Ashcroft wrote in a five-page handwritten letter to Bush, adding that he believed that the Justice Department “would be well served by new leadership and fresh inspiration” and that “my energies and talents should be directed toward other challenging horizons.”

Pick yourselves up off the floor, readers. That is undignified! Well, I guess if we have achieved safety and are now secure, we can do away with that Homeland color code, eh?

AssKKKroft's parting shot will surely have the Warp Resident sputtering about how it's not really true - we're not safe yet, but he can make us safe with his new mandate. We still need to be afraid. But not so afraid we can't spend money, because, hey, he's on the job.

Bush said in a statement that Ashcroft had "served our nation with honor, distinction and integrity..."

I suppose that is why he is under investigation to determine whether he "violated criminal campaign funding laws or federal disclosure laws relating to the transfer of a mailing list to his campaign committee." (source)

Oh well, that was when he was a senator, not while AG. But then, while in that job, AssKKKroft got his ass in a sling a time or four, too, didn't he? Yes, I recall something like that.

Ashcroft's former deputy, Larry Thompson, who recently took a job as general counsel at PepsiCo, is considered a possible successor, Republican officials have said. If appointed, he would be the nation's first black attorney general.

Others mentioned include Bush's 2004 campaign chairman, former Montana Gov. Marc Racicot, and White House counsel Alberto Gonzales.

Former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani had also been on some lists of possible replacements, but he issued a statement saying he "remains committed to sustaining the ongoing success of Giuliani Partners" his consulting group.

I've read that Giuliani is eyeing a run at the presidency in '08 and considers the AG position too sticky. Gonzales, you will remember is the guy who said the president can do anything he wants, because he's the president. If Marc Racicot gets it, YWA will have some posts for you to be sure.

Administration officials have said it was possible that Evans, 58, a close friend of Bush's from Texas, would be in line to succeed John Snow as Treasury secretary should Snow leave. But Evans wrote, "I have concluded with deep regret that it is time for me to return home."

Dude, smart move. It's going to get mighty ugly around Washington.
