- the anti-war movement may get wings, where it could have been expected to be somewhat placated by a Kerry coronation
-service men and women will be under increasing pressure to think about what they are doing
- potential whistleblowers who thought they might wait it out and get relief with a Kerry presidency may be forced to go ahead and speak out (however, the possibility that some who would have felt free to blow the whistle if Kerry were president but are still too afraid with a Bush reinstallment will refrain from speaking out may counter the positive possibility here)
- the insane Likuds and Cheney will not be replaced by more rational people who can hide the evil of their intentions better, and so outrages and monstrous bunglings that are certain to continue may finally supply the last straw which brings down the House of Bush
- only the last of the extremely rabid followers in the Cult of Bush will be left after four years to support the policies of this administration - everyone else who is yet still somehow fooling him/herself into thinking this administration is good for America will be unable to stay in denial - in other words, every American who can possibly wake up, will
- laborers may be forced to organize for real
- the varios groups of disenfranchised may be forced to join forces and finally work together, realizing the real divisions in this country are those of economic class
If Bush had not been reinstalled,
- there would be virtually no chance that he would have to ever be held accountable for what he has done, as opposed to the extremely slim chance there is now
- the Republican party would not be held to account, and the final disasters of the Iraq war and economic destruction/government dismantling would fall to the Democrat party (not that I care about that, because they are also responsible for those things, but it would have let the Rethugs deflect some of their own responsibility)
- we would not have the possibility of seeing Bush's head explode under the stress that his stupidity in an ever-increasing fiasco of Biblical proportions is going to create for him (after a brief interlude of arrogant pomp where he sees himself as truly crowned king) or, in the alternative, watching him fizzle and fry in the natural progression of his alcohol- and drug-induced deteriorating health (In light of the fact that Jim Bunning won his seat, to be sure, we can't expect the American people to give a rat's ass if their emperor is a total, certifiable, drooling, drug-propped senile lunatic, and remove him from office, but at least the possibility exists.)
So, possible positive effects of the nightmare exist, although they may be realized only in the long term. On the other hand, they also may be short-circuited if the Armageddon party realizes its goal before we get to the long term.
And on the homefront, I see in this election a very dangerous and ominous outcome for racial minorities and gays, as I think it will give the many bigots of our society encouragement to act out their prejudiced anger and hatred. We are headed, I believe, for ugly, home-grown terror that harkens back to the days of lynch mobs and the KKK. Will Americans, whose major concern in this election played out to be "moral issues", stand by for it as they seem willing to do for the loss of civil liberties under the PATRIOT act? Who knows.
On that note, one of the major news networks (CBS) has tonight noted that there is a possibility AssKKKroft will be dumped. That would be a good deal, but I'll believe it when I see it.
