Ariel Sharon's plan to unilaterally withdraw troops and Jewish settlers from the Gaza Strip while increasing his hold over the West Bank is a way to avoid a final peace settlement with the Palestinians, according to a senior Sharon adviser.
In a candid interview with Haaretz, Dov Weisglass, a senior policy adviser to the Israeli Prime Minister, said the purpose of the disengagement plan was "the freezing of the peace process".
Mr Weisglass told the newspaper that the plan had obtained US backing and it would allow Israel to avoid a final peace settlement, prevent the establishment of a Palestinian state and maintain its occupation indefinitely.
